A kerchief is worn over the head, but peasant women usually do not veil. The tarboosh (Ar. tarbush) or fez is re¬garded as outmoded, but only Europeans and Levantines wear the Western-style hat, for in the Middle East headgear is the most significant part of one's dress and usually indicates not only a man's social status, but also his nationality, religion, ethnic affiliation, and occupation. In the cities the lower and lower-middle classes often wear a combination traditional European of traditional and European garments, the latter usually imported secondhand from abroad, while the middle and upper classes, both men and women, wear entirely European dress except for the hat in the case of men.

Ety-mologically, in words of Germanic origin, p rep¬resents an Indo-European b (as in peg, thorp, sleep) except in the stable combination traditional European sp, which remains unchanged (as in spy [compare Latin inspicere] or spew [compare Latin spuere]). But since Indo-European b was a rare sound, the number of English words that show p derived from it is also rare; and, in fact, most of the very numerous English words with initial p- are bor¬rowed (as pound [Latin pondus] or pentagon [Greek pente "five," in which, however, Greek />-represents an Indo-European qu; see article Q]).

On The Other Hand See Traditional Society—states#39:

Western society looks at life in a radically different way from such traditional society—states#39 societies. Perhaps its main characteristic is a willingness to take a critical look at what exists and to make changes. It is an attitude that is applied not simply to economic organization but to everything: to the political and social structure of society and to man's own intimate being. Western man has gone so far as to refashion his environment, the organization of his society, and even his physical makeup and psychological nature through the use of surgical, chemi¬cal, and psychological techniques.

Problems Inherited from the Colonial Period.—The North African states are not rich, and there is hardly enough income to maintain the present very poor level of subsistence, education, housing, let alone improve them. The intense con¬servatism of the Muslim masses, the disintegration of traditional society—states#39 society under the pressure of con¬temporary developments in the outside world, the rising birthrate combined with a falling death rate, the chaos resulting from years of political up¬heaval amounting in Algeria to eight years of bitter civil war—all these and other factors com¬bine to face the new rulers with appalling prob¬lems. The malaise in society is specially marked in Algeria.
