Success Modern Enterprise: Men must organize the productive forces and direct their employment along chosen lines. Upon their ability quite as much as upon the skill and strength of the manual workers, and indeed to an even greater degree, depends the success modern enterprise of modern enterprise. Today this con¬cept is fully recognized and not even the most extreme socialist would deny the productive character of mental effort.Major enterprises have attempted to modify the system by introducing job evaluation and individual merit rating, but they have had only moderate success modern enterprise because of resistance from workers, especially older ones who are attuned to the existing status hierarchy, as well as from management elements themselves, who are cau¬tious about losing control of the work force. Unions, which see the new pay schemes as means of lowering rather than rationalizing wages and benefits, are also opposed. "Enterprise Consciousness." Membership of many unions is limited to the work force of a single enterprise. See Also Known Modern Times:The legislature has emerged as a distinct gov¬erning body only in modern times, in contrast to the executive and judiciary, whose form is rec¬ognizable in the most ancient states. Law in ancient and medieval times was regarded as pre-existent and either revealed to, or discoverable by, human reason. But the faster social, economic, and political changes of the modern era required instruments of control more Flexible than the tra¬ditional law of earlier times, and man came to recognize himself as capable of making law to suit his needs.5. Modern and Contemporary Art If Norway was not important in painting and sculpture in olden times it certainly has been, and is, in modern and contemporary times. Edvard Munch (1863-1944) is credited with "the modern revival of monumental painting in Europe." Be sure to see his famous murals in Oslo University's Aula (Auditorium) as samples of his ability. Some thirty of his excellent but less ambitious paint¬ings are hung in the National Gallery. Henrik S0rensen, Alf Rolfsen, Per Krogh, Jean Heiberg, Axel Revold, Kai Fjell, Aage Storstein and Arne Ekeland are other well-known modern times modern or contemporary artists and works by most or all of them can be seen in the new Oslo Town Hall or in other public buildings. They run to monumental frescoes and murals.
On The Other Hand See The Modern Games:The Olympic Games of ancient Greece formed part of a religious festival dedicated to the god Zeus. The modern Games were started for the purpose of building individual character through athletic training and discipline. The Olympics also promote world peace by providing friendly contacts among athletes of all nations.5. The Olympic Stadium, a structure first built under Lycurgus about 330 B. c. for the Panathenean Games, was rebuilt in modern times by a wealthy Greek named Averof. The Olympic Games, whose classic locale was in the Peloponnesian town of Olympia, were revived in this stadium in 1896. |
