Modern Methods:

Modern Methods Scale As Modern Conventional Modern Civic Although modern methods dance, like ballet, em¬ploys complex training methods based on body needs and the principles of movement, the cho¬reographer of modern methods dance does not use a basic vocabulary of movements that are the same in the classroom as on stage. And unlike ballet, modern methods dance has no universally accepted termi¬nology for its movements, because the choreog¬rapher of modern methods dance invents new movements for each new dance or gives new direction or sequence to previously used actions.

Many of the newer small pottery factories that manufacture a variety of tablewares and other household pottery began operation in vari¬ous parts of the United States between 1935 and 1950. The methods of manufacture used by these potteries have little in common with the pre-indus-trial tradition or with 19th century methods. Their economic survival is made possible by the use of modern methods technology, mechanical labor-saving and production devices and special methods of merchandising. Among the better known small potteries in this category are the Glidden Pottery in New York State and the Edith Heath Pottery in California.

Farming organically can relieve the demand on the dwindling stocks of chemical fertilizer raw materials (including energy) and reduce the environmental problems created by many fertilizers and pesticides. However, more research is needed before food can be produced organically on the same scale as modern conventional farming.

Large Scale and Small Scale Charts There is often confusion about the meaning of the terms "large scale" and "small scale" as used with respect to charts. Part of the problem is that the terms do not have exact definitions and are applied to charts relative to each other. Think of the second figure in a chart-scale ratio (e.g., 1:10,000) as the denominator of a fraction. The larger this value, the small¬er the fraction. Thus, a 1:80,000 chart is small scale in comparison to a 1:10,000 chart. The small-scale chart, however, cov¬ers a larger geographic area than a large-scale chart of the same paper size. Remember: Small scale, large area; large scale, small area. §

On The Other Hand See Modern Civic:

modern Civic Architecture.—Although the concen¬tration of governmental authority and money at the national level has favored a greater amount of building for the national governments than for the municipalities, urbanization and city problems have also required municipal governments to pro¬vide better facilities for dealing with local prob¬lems. The awakening of activity at the two principal levels of government—national and mu¬nicipal—has brought about a considerable advance in public architecture. Outstanding examples are the Ministry of Education and Health in Rio de Janeiro, numerous government buildings else¬where in Brazil, the City Hall in Montevideo, and the Civic Center in Santiago. In Caracas and in Bogota, also, civic centers are being created to meet modern Civic governmental needs.
