Modern Changes: The final consonants -b, -d, -g, and -r were dropped, and final semivowels appeared, to form diphthongs with the main vowel. The number of tones increased to four. In the majority of the modern Changes Chinese dialects there are usually only two grades of consonants (p and p') and, as we have noted, three consonant endings (-n, -ng, and a modern Changes -r). The four tones of modern Changes Chinese differ from "those of ancient Chinese in that the old first tone has been subdivided into the modern Changes first and second tones and the old fourth-tone words have been distributed among the other modern Changes tones.Although modern Changes dance, like ballet, em¬ploys complex training methods based on body needs and the principles of movement, the cho¬reographer of modern Changes dance does not use a basic vocabulary of movements that are the same in the classroom as on stage. And unlike ballet, modern Changes dance has no universally accepted termi¬nology for its movements, because the choreog¬rapher of modern Changes dance invents new movements for each new dance or gives new direction or sequence to previously used actions. See Also Modern Cultures:The peninsula of Anatolia is also a bridge area between different cultures, but instead of serving for communication among the various cultures of the Near East it is a means of contact between Europe and Asia. Since through it passed vari¬ous migrations from remote antiquity to modern cultures times, its remains understandably show a mixture of influences. As its considerable size and geo¬graphical diversity also favor the development of numerous local cultures, the region seldom shows a single culture like that of Egypt. The western coastal area tends always to be oriented toward Europe, while the eastern, and to a less extent the central, area is linked with Asia.Snow's s< and literary background especially fitted compose The Tv>o Cultures and the Sc Revolution (1960), a widely discussed lecti ploring the inadequacy of communication b> modern cultures scientists and people in the hum; Bibliography.—Karl, Frederick, C.
