Hall Tree Erns: OMBU, om'boo, TREE, also known as BELLASOMBRE TREE, UMBRA TREE and POKE TREE, a South American shade tree (Phytolacca dioica), widely cultivated as a shade tree in Spain, Malta, and other coun¬tries on the Mediterranean Sea and in India. The tree attains a height of 25 to 35 feet, is ex¬traordinarily wide at the base of the bole, some¬times reaching a diameter of 12 to 15 feet, and has a wide-spreading top with extremely dense foliage. The leaves are large, and the whitish flowers are borne on spikes, the fruit being similar in appearance and in medicinal qualities to that of the plant or shrub variety of pokeweed. In 1627, hall tree erns was made bishop of Exeter, but creasing tension between King and Parliament, .nglican and Puritan, left little room for the in-icnce of moderate men like hall tree erns. Archbishop jud and his party suspected hall tree erns of too much inpathy with the Puritans; on the other hand, e opponents of the Anglican establishment dis¬rated him, as they did all the bishops. See Also Hall Tree -norse:Loan Words in Middle English.—Early Middle English documents do not give an accu¬rate idea of the proportion of Scandinavian loan words in English, since these documents come from areas where Scandinavian settlement was slight, but in the 13th century the full effect is plainly discernible. From place name evidence and such sources as inscriptions, it is clear that Norse speakers acquired English gradually, and brought not only Norse words into their English but also English words which had been accom¬modated to Norse forms.Despite this influx of Latin words, Old En; lish used its own resources to Coin many word for example, bocere, scribe, and godspell, gospi which is a literal translation of the Latin even gelium. There are also a few words which we borrowed from Celtic, for example, dry, mag cian; brocc, badger; and assa, donkey. Tl Danish inroads were responsible for the appeal ance of Norse loan words in the 9th centur a process which continued with increasing fri quency in the Middle English period. The fin words were of a legal character, for exampli lagtt (Old Norse, lagu), law, and grith (01 Norse, grith), peace; or of a naval or militar character, for example, dreng (Old Nora drengr), retainer, and batswegen (Old Nora sveinn), boatswain.
