These remained die major divisions of the church home until the Reformation of the 16th cen¬tury. Wrought iron is softer than cast iron and has less carbon and other impurities in it. It is not brittle and may be hammered into bars, rolled into plates, or drawn into wires. Wrought iron may be welded; that is, separate pieces may be joined together by hammering when they are red-hot.The technique of inlay is used for silver as well as for base metal. A design is engraved, and the ground is cut away; or the design is etched, and the ground removed by acid. The resulting hollow is then filled with the inlay metal, gold or silver, which then is fused or hammered home.
